Tim Davis

I got an email the other day from a very angry and very disappointed individual (name withheld of course) asking, among other things: Why don’t you post any street photography? The short answer is…I don’t like most street photography*. I’m sorry, I just don’t.

This is not to say that I think street photography is bad, it’s simply my opinion that so much of this type of photography seems to only provide answers instead of questions (here comes the hate mail). This is to say that the visual puns as well as the often over done sentimental imagery of the genre keep me from connecting with it in a significant way. However, I will admit that I absolutely love Garry Winogrand, I mean, who doesn’t?

So what do I like? I guess you could say that I drift towards photographers who are predominantly concept heavy whilst being masters of the medium. A perfect example, aside from Wolfgang Tillmans, is Tim Davis. Davis is a photographer who melds intelligent observations with the seductive allure of formalist concerns.

I won’t go into any more detail about Davis’ practice because I would rather you explore and interpret his numerous series yourself.

As always, here is a selection of my favourites:

Note: If you’re interested in Street Photography The Sonic Blog just had a whole week devoted to the subject.

*This doesn’t mean I will never post any street photography, in fact I have. As I’ve said before, I don’t always have to post stuff I like.
